International Day of Charity: Less Talking. More Doing.
There’s a danger that corporate charity starts to look a bit predictable.
A cheque. A photograph. A hashtag. Job done.
That’s never really been our style at Redpath Bruce.
For us, giving back isn’t something saved for one awareness day a year. It’s woven into what we do as a business – sometimes through fundraising, sometimes through donations, sometimes by getting the team out of the office and involved, and sometimes simply by collecting the things people need.
So, as International Day of Charity arrives this September, rather than talking about what businesses could do, we thought we’d look at what Team RB has actually been up to.
Then there was football.
The Redpath Bruce team pulled on the boots for The Big Match 2026 at Ainslie Park, joining property and construction professionals to raise money towards a community minibus for the Spartans Community Foundation.
There were considerably more miles involved in the Kiltwalk, where members of Team RB raised more than £2,000 each in support of Dementia Scotland and Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.
We also swapped fundraising for chocolate at Easter, collecting and delivering Easter eggs to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.
And some of the biggest efforts have come from people within the wider Redpath Bruce family. Rowan’s son, Drew, took on the London Marathon in memory of his late father, Bryce McCall-Smith, raising more than £7,000 for the British Heart Foundation.
That story has particular resonance for us and sits alongside our ongoing work to raise awareness of heart health, CPR training and access to defibrillators.
Sometimes making a difference is considerably simpler. Christian recently reached his 10th blood donation – a reminder that giving an hour of your time can potentially give someone else considerably more.
Small actions count too
That principle sits behind a lot of what we do.
Our partnership with B1G1 means everyday business activity can create measurable impacts around the world, supporting projects connected to clean water, education, healthcare and sustainable communities.
B1G1 has now generated more than 360 million giving impacts through participating businesses globally. Our own Better Lives Programme focuses on projects aligned with reducing poverty and inequality, improving health and wellbeing, clean water and sanitation, and sustainable communities.
It means giving back doesn’t always need a marathon, a sponsored challenge or even a fundraising event.
Sometimes it can simply be built into the way you do business.
And we’re not finished yet.
And September isn’t exactly looking quiet.
We’re also currently recruiting as many of Team RB as possible to take on the Glasgow Bridges Walk for Kidney Research UK this September. The 6.1-mile challenge takes place on 26 September, helping to raise vital funds for research to improve the lives of people affected by kidney disease.
With another few miles to add to Team RB’s 2026 total, we’re hoping to see a strong Redpath Bruce turnout! Find out more about the Glasgow Bridges Walk and Kidney Research UK here.
Never Mind the Business is coming up, supporting Action for Children – an event we’ve been proud to get behind previously.
Then there’s Macmillan’s Coffee Morning. Cakes, coffee, a bit of healthy office competition and money raised for an important cause? We’re in.
No grand gestures required.
International Day of Charity exists to encourage charitable giving, volunteering and action around the world.
But perhaps its most useful reminder is that making a difference doesn’t have to start with something enormous.
Walk.
Run.
Bake.
Donate.
Collect.
Give blood.
Turn up.
Or build giving into something your business already does.
Our Better Lives Programme has always been based on the belief that businesses have a responsibility to make a positive difference both locally and globally. Redpath Bruce has supported organisations ranging from Social Bite and Macmillan Cancer Support to Action for Children, the British Heart Foundation, Maggie’s and many more.
There will always be more to do.
So we’re going to keep doing it.
Less talking. More doing.
